How does SharePoint support Silverlight Silverlight is hosted by adding script or markup to a web page In the SharePoint context that means that we can develop application pages, web part pages and web parts that host Silverlight Even some features in SharePoint itself are implemented in Silverlight When we created a new web part page the dialog that shows available web parts pages is actually implemented using Silverlight In addition SharePoint comes with a Silverlight web part that can be used to host custom Silverlight applications This web part has the markup and script already implemented, so that we only need to point it to the Silverlight package containing our Silverlight control We start our exploration of Silverlight web parts by creating a Silverlight web part that displays the task groups in a pie chart control The pie chart control is part of the Silverlight 3 Toolkit available on http://silverlight codeplexcom/releases In order to use this control you will have to download and install the Silverlight Toolkit on your development machine To build our Silverlight web part, we will first create a Visual Studio solution with a Silverlight application project that implements the pie chart, and an empty SharePoint project that we will use to deploy the Silverlight application to SharePoint Once the application is deployed we will use the Silverlight web part included in SharePoint to host our Silverlight application To get started, open Visual Studio in elevated mode and select new project In the New Project dialog select SharePoint then 2010 and pick the
